Two Ways to Change Your Address: Step By Step

1. Update Your Address Online

The easiest and quickest way to alter your address is using the DVLA's online service. Please follow the steps below to update your current licence online.

Who Can Apply Online?

Holders of a driver's licence, either full or provisional, who live in the United Kingdom.

  • Must not be banned from driving.

  • What You’ll Need:

  • Your driving licence

  • National Insurance number

  • UK passport number (if you have one)

Steps:

  • Visit the DVLA’s website and select the online service.

  • Follow the prompts to confirm your identity and provide the addresses where you’ve lived in the last three years.

  • Submit your application and wait for your updated licence to arrive within two weeks.

  • Note: You can continue driving while waiting for your new licence.

2. Update Your Address by Post

Do you prefer regular mail? By submitting the required paperwork to the DVLA, you can also change your address.

For Photocard Licence Holders:

Fill out the 'changes' portion of the D741 form that was included with your licence, or get a D1 form from the Post Office (for cars and motorbikes) or a D2 form (for trucks and buses).

  • Mail it along with your current photocard licence to:

For Paper Licence Holders:

Fill out a D1 or D2 form.

  • Include your current driving licence, a recent passport-size photo, and original identity documents.

  • Mail to the address above.

  • Processing Time:

    Your updated licence will arrive within three weeks.

  • Vehicle Log Book (V5C) : Update your vehicle’s log book by completing Section 6 and sending it to the DVLA.
  • Vehicle Tax Direct Debit: Notify the DVLA of your new address to ensure your tax payments continue smoothly.
  • Private Registration Documents: If you have a private registration, update your V750 or V778 documents with your new address.
