It's important to comprehend vehicle safety when getting ready for your HGV or PCV driving test. A series of "show me, tell me" questions will be asked during your on-road driving exam to gauge your familiarity with safety protocols and vehicle inspections. The following license categories are covered by these enquiries:

- C1: Medium-sized lorry
- C: Large goods lorry
- D1: Minibus
- D: Bus and coach

Questions You Must Know About Vehicle Safety

1. Securing Doors

Q. Show me how you guarantee the security of all doors, especially cargo doors.
A. Verify that the cargo door locking levers are in the suggested secured position and that all doors are closed.

2. Air Leaks

Q. Show me how to check for air leaks.
A. Check the gauges for pressure dips, fill up the air tanks and listen for any visible leaks as you move about the car.

3. Loading Safety

Q. Tell me the key safety factors for loading the vehicle.
A. To keep control when driving, distribute the burden equally. Verify that the load complies with weight and size limitations, then fasten it to prevent movement or falling.

4. Reflector

Q. Tell me how to check the reflectors.
A.  Verify that every reflector is installed, clean, and free of cracks or breaks.

5. Windscreen and Windows

Q. Tell me how to inspect the windscreen and windows.
A. Make sure they are defect-free, clear, and clean. Get rid of any mascots or stickers that can make it harder to see.

6. Mudguards

Q. Please demonstrate for me how to inspect the mudguards.
A. During your daily walk-around checks, make sure the spray suppression equipment and mudguards are secure.

7. Tyres

Q. Tell me how to check tire pressure, tread depth, and overall condition.
A. By the manufacturer's instructions, make sure the tread depth is at least 1 mm throughout three-quarters of the tread width, and check the pressures while the tires are cold. Look for any visible damage, wounds, or cords.

8. Windscreen Wipers

Q. Tell me how to check windscreen wipers.
A. Make that the blades are in good shape and that they function properly.

9. Body Condition

Q. Tell me how to inspect the vehicle’s body.
A. Look for any flaws or loose panels that can put other drivers in danger. Verify the security of the inspection panels.

10. Air Pressure

Q. Show me how to check the air pressure.
A. Make sure warning lights or audio alarms are off and check gauges for the proper pressures.

11. Engine Oil

17. Lights

Q. Tell me how to ensure headlights, sidelights, and tail lights are working.
A. To make sure, turn on the light switch and then have a look around the car.

18. Tachograph

Q. Show me how to replace the tachograph disc.
A. If necessary, describe the digital system or show how to insert a tachograph disc.

19. Loading Mechanism

Q. Tell me how to operate specific machinery like a tail lift.
A. Describe or show how to operate safely and correctly.

20. Power-Assisted Steering

Q. Please demonstrate the power-assisted steering check.
A. To make sure the steering wheel is working, turn it after you've moved away or apply light pressure to it while starting the engine.

21. Indicators

A. Check all of the lights and turn on the hazard switch or indicators.

22. Washer Fluid

A. Locate the reservoir and ensure it’s adequately filled.

23. Instrument Checks

A. Verify that warning lights are off and that all gauges are reading accurately.

A. Clear the windscreen by adjusting the fan, temperature, and air direction controls.

27. Rear Fog Lights

28. Main Beam

Q. Tell me how to get from the dipped beam to the main beam.
A. Check the main beam indication and operate the switch.

There will be two types of questions in the "Show Me, Tell Me" section of your HGV driving test:

“Show Me” question: It will be necessary for you to physically demonstrate how you would do a specific safety check.

“Tell Me” question: You will describe how you would do a particular vehicle safety task.

Before you start the driving phase of the exam, these questions are asked.

Additional towing-related checks may be included in the questions if you're taking the test with a trailer (for example, for a C+E licence).
