Understanding the D1 Licence Requirements for Minibus Driving

The D1 licence is what you need to obtain in order to drive a minibus carrying passengers, and you will need to get this additional licence if you wish to drive for financial gain.

If you passed your driving (CAT B) test after January 1st 1997, you will need to obtain this licence before starting your new driving career.

What is a D1 licence?

When you have obtained this licence, you are allowed to drive a vehicle carrying nine to sixteen passengers, holders of the CAT D1 licence will be able to drive a vehicle up upto 8 metres long, and in addition to this, you can also obtain your D1+E licence which enables you to tow a trailer that weighs no more than 750kg. GS Driver Training can provide all necessary guidance and training.

How to obtain a CAT D1 licence

You will be required to complete the following steps to obtain this licence.

  • Obtain forms D2 and D4
  • Complete form D2 yourself and book your medical exam, ensuring you take these forms with you.
  • Once your medical exam with the Dr. has been completed, send both completed forms to the DVLA with your current driving licence.
  • Once you have your provisional licence, you must sit your theory exams, and there are two parts to this exam, Multiple choice and Hazard Perception. GS Driver Training can provide all necessary training for these exams.
  • Once you have your provisional licence and have passed your theory tests, you can book your practical D1(+E) driving test.
  • GS Driver Training can assist you with all the knowledge and expertise to ensure you feel competent and skilled to pass this test.
