When is C1+E needed instead of C1?

Category C1+E covers a C1 vehicle with a trailer over 750kg, where the combined maximum authorised mass is no more than 12,000kg. Check the vehicle and trailer plated weights together, as well as the codes on your current licence.

C1+E is different from Category C+E: it relates to the C1 vehicle range, not every heavier goods-vehicle combination. Check the real vehicle, trailer and intended work rather than assuming an ambulance or job title establishes a licence or Driver CPC requirement.

Optional Pass Protection

Add Pass Protection for £550.00 including VAT before the original course starts. Two additional Module 3a and/or Module 3b attempts in total; each includes up to two hours of training plus the test.

Potential saving up to £350 compared with two £450 Module 3b retests purchased separately. Actual saving depends on the attempts used; no pass or saving is guaranteed.

About the Category C1+E Licence

The Category C1+E licence allows you to drive a medium lorry (up to 7,500 kg) towing a trailer with a MAM over 750 kg, provided the combined MAM does not exceed 12,000 kg. It is required for specialist roles such as horse box haulage, large motorhome towing, and some ambulance configurations. For a full guide, see our Category C1+E Licence Explained article.
