What is HGV Class 2 Licence?
If you’ve ever looked up from the inside lane and wondered what it takes to command a 44-tonne artic, you’re in the right place. At GS Driver Training, we turn that curiosity into confidence—first through our HGV Driving Experience at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Cranleigh (home of Top Gear) and then through structured Category C and C+E courses.
Why choose an HGV career right now?
To begin with, road freight keeps the UK moving. Moreover, professional HGV drivers enjoy clear progression, varied work, and the satisfaction of mastering serious machinery. If you like practical skills, problem-solving, and independence, then HGV driving is a strong fit.
Why GS Driver Training?
Most importantly, we offer real trucks, real coaching, and real routes. Additionally, you’ll train on well-maintained DAF vehicles, practise on realistic manoeuvring areas, and learn with experienced instructors who coach in bite-size, actionable steps. As a result, first-timers and career changers progress calmly and consistently.
Train where you’ll love driving
Specifically, our HGV Driving Experience runs at Dunsfold Aerodrome—an iconic, private location that’s perfect for confidence building. Typically, sessions run most weekdays with selected weekends, with 45-minute or 60-minute options. Furthermore, vouchers are instant e-delivery and valid for 12 months, which makes them ideal gifts or pre-course tasters.
Your training path (simple and clear)
Step 1: Choose your category
• Category C (Class 2) – Rigid vehicles over 3,500 kg MAM with a trailer up to 750 kg. Often, this is the most popular entry point.
• Category C+E (Class 1) – Articulated or drawbar combinations. Ultimately, this suits drivers aiming for trunking and long-haul work.
If you’re unsure, tell us your goals—local work, long-distance, or sector preferences—and we’ll recommend the best starting point.
Step 2: Get the basics in place
First, you’ll need a full car licence, medical (D4), and the correct provisional entitlement. Then, if you plan to drive professionally, sort Driver CPC (initial or periodic). Meanwhile, our team guides you through forms and bookings so nothing slows you down.
Step 3: Train and test—calm, structured, effective
Our courses blend vehicle familiarisation (controls, safety systems, mirror discipline), low-speed mastery (precision steering, clutch/creep, observation routines), reversing and manoeuvres (including off-road test elements), road driving (planning, hazard perception, eco-driving), and safety and compliance (walk-round checks, load basics, tachograph use). When ready, you’ll take the off-road (3a) and on-road (3b) tests. Crucially, we schedule smartly so you carry momentum from training to pass day.
Not sure yet? Start with an HGV Experience Day
Alternatively, begin with a one-hour guided drive in a 44-tonne DAF at Dunsfold. Soon, you’ll practise smooth starts, tight turns, and progressive braking and—time permitting—a taste of reversing. Almost always, guests leave with a big-truck grin and a clearer sense of whether HGV life fits.
What to expect with us
• First, a friendly welcome and safety brief.
• Next, coaching that meets you where you are—new, rusty, or stepping up to Class 1.
• Then, plenty of cab time; we prioritise hands-on practice.
• Finally, clear next steps—CPC, medicals, or booking your upgrade.
